The importance of clouds in determining the Earth's radiative budget was well known to the Earth and planetary scientists who, back in the late 1960s and early 1970s, built the first climate models. Cloud cover was simulated in early climate models as a simple function of the grid box relative humidity, while cloud properties like optical depth were assigned as a function of cloud height. Convective clouds were simulated using the convective instability theory. Right from the start of climate modeling efforts, the need to evaluate the clouds simulated by the models was urgent, as cloud amount and property variability played a large role in determining the models' simulated climate. In this lesson, we will follow the efforts of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) climate modeling group to evaluate the clouds simulated by the GISS climate model against the available observations of each different time period, and thus improve the representation of clouds in the model.
