Truran, J.W. %AB Cameron, A.G.W. %AB The limiting conditions consistent with p-process synthesis in supernova envelopes are inferred from calculations of the appropriate rates of proton capture and neutron photodisintegration. Temperatures in excess of 2×109 °K are required, for proton mass densities ∼l02g/cm3, if significant production of p-process nuclei is to take place on a hydrodynamic time scale. These conditions are inconsistent with the lower temperatures (T ∼ 5×108 °K) required in the underlying helium region for the production of 16N, 18O, 19F, and 21Ne (Howard, Arnett, and Clayton). We conclude that these processes must be appropriate to very different stellar or supernova environments. Arguing that supernova events provide the most likely site for p-process synthesis, we suggest that the nucleosynthesis conditions examined by Howard, Arnett, and Clayton might be realized in the helium zones of stars which experience the phenomenon of helium-burning shell flashing described by Schwarzschild and Härm.
