Rosenzweig 2022

Rosenzweig, C., 2022: Martin Parry: Setting the course of climate change impacts and adaptation research. In Our Warming Planet: Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation. C. Rosenzweig, M. Parry, and M. De Mel, Eds., Lectures in Climate Change, vol. 2, World Scientific, pp. xv-xxii, doi:10.1142/9789811238222_0001.

Martin Parry has always reminded me a bit of Jack Aubrey — the courageous British naval sea captain of the early 1800s created by the author Patrick O'Brian. Perhaps this is because sailing is one of Martin's passions, but also because he is a natural leader and a keen scholar, which were Jack Aubrey's signature traits (O'Brian, 1970). As Co-Chair of IPCC Working Group II on Climate Change Impacts, Adaptation, and Vulnerability for the Fourth Assessment Report (AR4), Martin marshaled over 60 authors, led us through a bruising approval fight with dozens of national delegates, and then defended the Report in the face of vicious attacks during "ClimateGate". Throughout his career, he has guided our field to a series of important "victories", by which I mean significant advances in the science of climate change impacts and adaptation, deepening understanding of the planetary crisis of our time.
