Rosenzweig and Hillel 1992

Rosenzweig, C., and D. Hillel, 1992: All the world as our stage: Review of "The Earth as Transformed by Human Action: Global and Regional Changes in the Biosphere Over the Past 300 Years" by Turner et al. Nature, 355, 781-782, doi:10.1038/355781a0.

A herculean effort by a large group of geographers, centred at Clark University, has culminated in this massive book of 42 information-packed chapters. With some 85 authors, and a foreword, preface, postscript, as well as editorial introductions to each of the four sections, this is indeed an opus magnum. The selection of topics is comprehensive, the authors are leading authorities and there is an extensive bibliography. Altogether, the book is an impressive and highly laudable undertaking by geographers to 'put it all together', that is, to establish a theoretical framework for assessing the environmental changes wrought by modern societies in the past three centuries, and to document these changes in detail. As such, the tome will serve as an indispensable reference and resource on global change. It will be used by all scholars, teachers and students concerned with the increasingly pressing issue of the environment and its management — or mismanagement — by humans everywhere on our planet.

The volume is actually an expanded 'proceedings' of a large conference held in 1987 at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts. It is a revision of the earlier examination of the subject by geographers in 1955 that resulted in the book Man's Role in Changing the Face of the Earth, which was in turn inspired by G.P. Marsh's pioneering and classic work, The Earth as Modified by Human Action, first published more than a century ago (1885).
