Although Wignall apparently agrees that the Late Permian extinctions were relatively rapid, he questions our conclusions that the end-Permian extinction pulse was very abrupt and severe (Rampino and Adler, 1998). We showed that at least 85% of foraminiferal taxa had last occurrences near the contact between the Bellerophon Formation and the overlying Tesero Horizon in the southern Alps, Italy; but even more important is that all taxa with last occurrences prior to that level in some sections reach the contact level in other sections. This is clear evidence that the earlier "disappearances" in some localities are a manifestation of the Signor-Lipps effect.
