Beyond the local devastation and regional effects, it is known that some historical eruptions had a noticeable impact on climate and agriculture on a hemispheric to global basis. This being the case, much larger eruptions may possibly have caused severe "volcanic winters", perhaps similar to the recently propoed "nuclear winter". These supereruptions must therefor be considered in discussions of matural hazards that might have global consequences.
