A comparison of the distribution, magnitude and timing of the Younger Dryas event in Europe and eastern North America shows several striking similarities and differences. The European event is documented throughout the region from Scandinavia to the Mediterranean while the North American oscillation is most evident in the maritime Canadian provinces and southern New England. The pollen signal in Europe and Canada typically shows a drop in tree pollen percentage and increase in herbs (i.e, Artemisia) while the southern New England stratigraphy shows the replacement of a mixed boreal conifer-hardwood forest with boreal conifer forest alone. Bulk radiocarbon stratigraphy places the Younger Dryas on both sides of the Atlantic approximately 11-10,000 ¹⁴C yr BP, but available AMS dates from both regions suggest the timing may be closer to 10,600-10,000 ¹⁴C yr BP. Uncertainties in ¹⁴C production rate and/or partitioning in the carbon cycle suggest that establishing the true age and duration of the Younger Dryas may be quite difficult to ascertain.
