Questions concerning the sensitivity and mechanism of Quaternary climate change are explored using the Younger Dryas abrupt climatic event. Global climate model (GCM) experiments and re-examination of the fossil record provide a means of assessing the relative magnitude and distribution of this type of climatic fluctuation, and offer opportunities for ascertaining its origin.
