Lacis 2009

Lacis, A.A., 2009: Albedo feedbacks. In Encyclopedia of Paleoclimatology and Ancient Environments. V. Gornitz, Ed., Encyclopedia of Earth Sciences Series, Springer, pp. 2-4.

The large albedo contrast that occurs when snow, ice, and cloud amounts change strongly affects the amount of solar radiation that is absorbed by the Earth-atmosphere system. This in turn affects the atmospheric temperature distribution, leading to mutual interacions between regions of snow, ice, and cloud fields and the local surface and atmospheric temperature distributions. These physical interactions comprise the basic climate "feedback" effects whereby a given change in temperature directly or indirectly induces a change in snow, ice, or cloud amount, which in turn affects the amount of solar energy that is absorbed, thus magnifying the original temperature perturbation.
