Space science is the collection of scientific problems to which space vehicles can make some specific contributions not achievable by ground-based experiments. At present this field includes broad segments of the traditional disciplines of the earth sciences, physics, and astronomy. In future years the biological sciences will join this group in an important role, as our explorations of the moon and planets provide us with opportunities for studying the conditions under which physical life may have developed. This article reviews some highlights of recent research in thephysical sciences.
