Renewed focus on the contemporary CO2 budget, especially on the partitioning of the anthropogenic CO2 sink between land and sea, has greatly expanded our understanding of both terrestrial and oceanic carbon dynamics. Nevertheless, many uncertainties remain about the processes that maintain the present-day carbon balance and about how those processes may change in the future. In this chapter, I briefly review estimates of biospheric carbon fluxes derived from atmospheric observations and models, as well as the processes that may be responsible.
