Finzi, A., and R.A. Wolf, 1969: Possible conversion of rotational energy of the neutron star in the Crab Nebula into energy of relativistic electrons. Astrophys. J., 155, L107-L108, doi:10.1086/180312.

The observation that the period of the pulsating radio source in the Crab Nebula is increasing at a rate of 1 part in 2×103 per year suggests that a neutron star is releasing rotational energy at a rate of about 1038 ergs/sec, which is approximately the rate of energy release needed to account for the observed production of relativistic electrons at the center of the nebula.
