Fairbridge, and S. Jelgersma, Eds., NATO ASI Series C: Mathematical and Physical Sciences, vol. 325, Springer, pp. 459-462, doi:10.1007/978-94-009-0701-0_27.

On a global scale, vegetation belts are the natural expression of the response of major ecosystems to climatic parameters. Environmental conditions are mainly controlled by air temperature and water availability. For Example, in herbaceous savannas and steppes a direct linear to exponential relation exists between total vegetation weight (biomass in dry matter or in carbon) and rainfall (Le Houerou, 1990). In high latitudes or high altitudes temperature is the limiting factor.
