Methods are developed for determining sea surface temperatures, temperature profiles, and humidity profiles from infrared data as obtained from satellites. Temperature profiles are corrected directly according to the ratio of the 'measured' to the calculated radiance, whereas humidity profiles are corrected inversely according to the ratio of these radiances. In addition, ratios of measured and calculated radiances are amplified by small gain factors to reduce the computing time. An iterative scheme for determining successively sea surface temperature, temperature profile, humidity profile, back to sea surface temperature, and so on is also discussed.
