Hassol, and P. Grabhorn, Eds., New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, pp. 121-162.The anticipated global sea level rise due to climate warming will greatly amplify risks to the coastal population of New York State, leading to permanent inundation of low-lying areas (including wetlands), more frequent flooding by storm surges, and potential for increased beach erosion. Saltwater could reach farther up estuaries, such as the Hudson River, potentially contaminating urban water supplies, while increased water depth could alter the propagation of both the tide and storm surges up the Hudson River to the Federal Dam in Troy. These hazards will continue to be exacerbated by development in the coastal zone.
