Bird, M.K., M. Heyl, M. Allison, S.W. Asmar, D.H. Atkinson, P. Edenhofer, D. Plettmeier, R. Wohlmuth, L. Iess, and G.L. Tyler, 1997: The Huygens Doppler Wind Experiment. In Huygens: Science, Payload and Mission, ESA SP-1177. E. Wilson, Ed., ESA Publications Division, ESTEC, pp. 139-162.

The primary scientific objective of the Doppler Wind Experiment is to determine the direction and strength of Titan's zonal winds. A height profile of wind velocity will be derived from the residual Doppler shift of the Probe's readio relay signal to the Cassini Orbiter, corrected for all known orbit and propagation effects. Wind-induced motion of the Probe will be measured to a precision better than 1 m/s from parachute deployment at an altitude of ∼160 km down to the surface. As secondary objectives, this investigation is also capable of providing invaluable information on Probe dynamics (e.g. spin rate and spin phase) during the atmospheric descent, as well as the Probe's location and orientation up to after impact on Titan.
