Developing secondary students' understanding about the Earth's climate and global climate change (GCC) is critical for empowering future citizens and is a key focus of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS Lead States, 2013). However, research documents persisting challenges to students' understanding about this phenomenon, even with a growing emphasis on climate education through curriculum and instruction. Hence, there is a need for innovative approaches that allow students to construct robust and scientifically-accurate explanations about Earth's climate system and support effective, climate-focused teaching and learning. In this study of two 9th grade teachers' classes, we investigate secondary students' model-based reasoning about GCC grounded in a model-based curricular intervention involving the use of a data-driven, computer-based global climate model. Study findings show that students in one classroom exhibited greater gains in conceptual understanding of disciplinary concepts related to modeling Earth's climate than those in the other, how students were able to use the global climate model for making predictions, creating explanations, and organizing their ideas about the phenomenon of GCC, and the unique ways in which the two teachers enacted the curriculum. Results reported here have important implications for our ongoing efforts to revise the curriculum module and support teachers to implement it in their classrooms, as well as contribute to a growing body of climate education research.
