ABSTRACT

Ma and Tipping 1994

Ma, Q., and R.H. Tipping, 1994: The detailed balance requirement and general empirical formalisms for continuum absorption. J. Quant. Spectrosc. Radiat. Transfer, 51, 751-757, doi:10.1016/0022-4073(94)90129-5.

Two general empirical formalisms are presented for the spectral density which take into account the deviations from the Lorentz line shape in the wing region of resonance lines. These formalisms satisfy the detailed balance requirement. Empirical line shape functions, which are essential to provide the continuum absorption at different temperatures in various frequency regions for atmospheric transmission codes, can be obtained by fitting to experimental data.
