The validity of the plane-parallel model of the angular variation of reflected solar and emitted thermal radiation from clouds is explored by comparing coincident retrievals from satellites with different spatial resolutions and viewing geometries. These results provide a preliminary assessment of the accuracy of the cloud optical properties inferred from the ISCCP (International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project) analysis.
