A Workshop on Climate-Vegetation Interactions was held at Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt, Maryland, January 27-29, 1986. This workshop brought together leading scientists in understanding biological and atmospheric processes in the earth's system and the changes in these processes resulting from environmental alteration.

The workshop concerned the effects of changing atmospheric composition (mainly CO₂) and changing climate on vegetation, and the effects of vegetation on climate, particularly its role in the hydrologic cycle. The intent was to increase interactions between biospheric and atmospheric scientists and to define research and data needs for more complete understanding of climate-vegetation relationships.

Atmospheric scientists, plant hydrologists, ecologists, paleoclimatologists, hydrologists, forestry scientists, atmospheric chemists, oceanographers, remote sensing scientists, and others from the United States, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Brazil, New Zealand, and Australia presented tutorials on their research areas and brought their expertise to bear on three questions:

1. How will vegetation change in the next 50 years, when climate and CO₂ are expected to be changing?
2. How fast can vegetation patterns respond to climate change?
3. What are the major interactions and feedback mechanisms between climate and vegetation?
