A fundamental knowledge of the spectral characteristics of light reflected from a developing crop canopy, as well as an understanding of the effect of varying atmospheric parameters on incident and reflected radiation, is required to effectively design and extract information from space-borne observing systems for agricultural monitoring. Simulation studies based on high resolution airborned spectrometer data indictae that changes in biomass, plant pigment, and leaf water content can be independently tracked by monitoring the reflective properties of vegetation with an appropriate selection of bands.
