Emission lines from the carbon chains HCnN, n=3, 5, 7 and 9 have been observed at 3mm, 7mm and 1.4cm in a number of dark clouds, Orion A and IRC+10216. The data were interpreted by comparison to the results of non-LTE excitation calculations. Two component models for TMC-1 were constructed which suggest that, in contrast to previous studies, relative molecular abundances do not vary substantially along the cloud ridge, whereas the H2 density does. All available data for carbon chains in other dark clouds are consistent with approximately constant relative carbon chain abundance: HCnN/HCn+2N ~ 2-3. This appears to differ from the Orion molecular cloud, in which HC3N/HC5N = 13±6. We argue that it is premature to derive abundance ratios for IRC+10216 because of the uncertainties in the excitation rates in this particular environment.
