A comparison of observed and theoretical mass-luminosity relations for unevolved stars in high-mass eclipsing binary systems and in low-mass visual binary systems is used to find the hydrogen and metals abundances of Population I stars: X = 0.69±0.12 and Z = 0.036±0.039. Alternatively, by adopting Z = 0.03±0.01, one finds X = 0.71±0.03. Limitations of the method are discussed briefly.
