ABSTRACT

Canuto and Fassio-Canuto 1973

Canuto, V., and L. Fassio-Canuto, 1973: Pair annihilation into neutrinos in strong magnetic fields. Phys. Rev. D, 7, 1593-1600, doi:10.1103/PhysRevD.7.1593.

The production of a pair of neutrinos via annihilation of an electron and a positron is computed in the presence of a strong magnetic field typical of neutron stars. The results are compared with the zero-field case, and it is shown that the neutrino luminosity QH is greater than Q0 for temperatures up to T ≅ 3×108 K and densities up to 106 g/cm3. For temperatures exceeding T=3.85×108 °K, QH < Q0 at any density. Since it was previously established that electromagnetic losses are systematically losses are systematically enhanced, the thermal history of the star will therefore result from a delicate balance between electromagnetic and neutrino energy losses.
