ABSTRACT

Chiu and Canuto 1971

Chiu, H.Y., and V. Canuto, 1971: Theory of radiation mechanism of pulsars. I. Astrophys. J., 163, 577-594.

A possible mechanism for pulsar radiation is proposed. A maserlike action is shown to take place on account of a nonthermal distribution of the electrons due to the presence of an electric field. The radiation process takes place via Coulomb bremsstrahlung of the elecrtons in the presence of a strong quantizing magnetic field. The model predicts that the amplification of radiation in the radio range gives brightness temperatures ranging from 1021° to over 1031°K, depending on the individual pulsar. This is in the range of the observed brightness temperature of pulsars.
