The First ISCCP (International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project) Regional Experiment (FIRE) was organized in 1984 to validate cloudiness and radiation parameterizations used in general circulation models, to characterize the properties and determine the physical processes that govern marine stratus and stratocumulus systems, to determine the extent, radiative characteristics, and processes that maintain cirrus, to derive statistics of cloud physical and radiative properties, and to assemble datasets that facilitate independent studies of these topics. This paper presents an overview of the project, the field campaigns conducted, and some of the results from analysis of FIRE datasets. Four intensive observation periods have been completed: Cirrus I in October 1986, Marine Stratus in July 1987, Cirrus II in November 1991 and as part of ASTEX (Atlantic Stratocumulus Transition Experiment) in July 1992. FIRE team members also participated in the TOGA-COARE experiment. Planning is underway for FIRE III, the first component of which will be conducted over the Arctic Ocean.
