We report a calculation aimed at showing that a system of strongly interacting baryons under sufficiently high pressure (P ≃ 1030 atm) and densities (ρ > 1015 g/cc) minimizes the energy by arranging the constituents in a lattice structure rather than in a fluid phase. The required pressures and densities do indeed exist in the interior of neutron stars, and the interesting question is to find out if the matter inside a neutron star can crystallize. Previous work on the structure of neutron stars indicated that the crust is composed of ordinary nuclei arranged in a crystalline structure.
